Turn gift wrapping into number practice with the Counting Craze activity. Young learners practice counting objects—like snowmen and dreidels—on patterned paper or fabric, and discover that the last number they say when counting objects tells "how many" in all.
Transform holiday cards (new or recycled) into special gift boxes in the Greeting Card Boxes activity. Before constructing the boxes, for personal gifts or mementos, learners make practice boxes from grid paper while working with area and volume.
Bake up enough cookies or fry up enough latkes for even the largest holiday gathering. In the Double or More activity, learners double—or triple or quadruple—a recipe. While figuring out how much will be needed to increase the recipe to feed everyone, learners explore fractions, multiplication and addition.
Close out the old year and ring in the new with the Party Hat Symmetry activity. Make New Year's Eve hats out of wrapping paper, using symmetry and measurement to cut out the shapes needed to assemble the hats.
