Modeling Concepts of 5', 3', Antiparallel and Complementary in DNA Structure

Learners act as nucleotides as they build a human model of DNA. Learners' hands represent the 3' and 5' locations of the hydroxyl and triphosphate groups of each nucleotide. Learners build one strand of DNA by linking hands, then build the complementary strand. From this activity, learners can see the two strands run antiparallel. Activity contains questions as a suggested assessment. Learners should be familiar with DNA structure prior to completing this activity.

  • DNA structure manipulatives, such as DNA Puzzle Kit (Carolina Biological Supply, NP-17-1050)or Pop Bead Kits (Ward’s DNA Simulation Lab Activity, 36-W-1600, or Carolina DNA Simulation BioKit, NP-17-1033)
  • Visual materials of DNA and nucleotide structure (such as overheads of nucleotide and DNA structure)
  • Sheets of paper with nucleotide structure photocopied onto them, mixture of all DNA nucleotides
