Visitors add drops of copper sulfate solution onto a steel nail. They observe the nail change color from silver to brown as the copper plates onto the nail. They observe the growing crystals through a magnifying glass. Visitors learn that liquids may be full of metal ions that are invisible. They learn that this particular solution contains copper ions that react with the solid iron. This kind of chemical change, where electrons move between atoms or molecules, is called an oxidation/reduction or "redox" reaction. These reactions are very important in industry.
