Animal Anti-Freeze

In this outdoor winter activity, learners search for and create hibernation sites that will protect gelatin "animals" from freezing. Learners come to understand that hibernating animals need to take care in selecting a sleeping spot that will provide protection from the winter cold.

  • 4 small paper cups for each learner
  • 4 small paper cards or cup tops for each learner
  • 1 hand trowel or other digging tool for each learner
  • 30 ml (2 tablespoon) measuring spoon
  • 1 liter liquid gelatin (for every 10 kids)
  • small box or knit cap

  • large thermos bottle or picnic jug
  • tray for cups
