In this activity, learners take apart a used zinc-carbon dry cell battery. Besides making for an interesting lesson in electrochemistry, taking apart a spent D-cell also allows learners to salvage many materials which can be reused in other chemistry experiments (see related link). Separated materials can also be safely recycled. Note that the battery in this activity is a zinc-carbon dry cell. Zinc-carbon cells are commonly labeled "general purpose" or "heavy duty," and will not have the word "alkaline" on the case.
