Go with the Flow

In this activity, learners discover how hard their hearts work to pump blood. Learners hold one hand above their head and one hand by their side for sixty seconds, and then compare the color of their two hands. From this activity, learners discover that the hands in the air are paler because gravity makes it harder for their hearts to pump blood to the hands over their heads, but easier for their hearts to pump blood to the hands that are hanging down. This activity could be connected to a general discussion on the effects of gravity.
