How Much is a Name Worth?

In this math lesson, learners use simple addition facts to compute values (in dollars and cents) for their names. Next, learners add larger numbers to compute the combined value of all the names in their group. Finally, they use the group totals to compute the combined value of the all names in the larger group or class. To calculate the values, learners can use counters, draw tens and ones, group numbers into doubles, find tens, count on, etc. It is not necessary for learners to know how to add using the common regrouping algorithm, nor is it necessary for them to know how to add coins. This activity is designed to allow learners to explore combining strategies on their own and in small groups.
