In this activity, learners create slime to model mucus and examine how it collects simulated particles. Mucus keeps particles from the environment out of our lungs when we breathe. Activity includes step-by-step directions for how to make the mucus mixture, suggested reflection questions, and the science behind the model. An activity video explains how to make the slime mixture and how mucus works. A Spanish version of the activity and video are also available.

  • Laundry detergent (must contain some form of borate)*
  • Food coloring

  • 4 Kitchen spices (e.g. ground cinnamon, dill, parsley, black pepper)
